TL;DR: List your tasks, how long each takes, and what each depends on. Taskade AI finds the longest chain of dependent tasks, which is the critical path, shows the slack on every other task, and updates the plan when a date moves.
What Is a Critical Path Diagram?
A critical path diagram shows the chain of dependent tasks that sets the earliest finish date of a project. A delay on any task in that chain delays the whole project. Tasks off the chain have slack, also called float: they can slip a little without moving the end date.
Here is a five-task example in days. "Earliest" is the earliest start and finish. "Latest" is the latest start and finish that still keep the end date.
| Task (days) | Depends on | Earliest start-finish | Latest start-finish | Slack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A Plan (2) | none | 0-2 | 0-2 | 0 |
| B Design (4) | A | 2-6 | 2-6 | 0 |
| C Content (3) | A | 2-5 | 3-6 | 1 |
| D Build (5) | B, C | 6-11 | 6-11 | 0 |
| E Launch (1) | D | 11-12 | 11-12 | 0 |
The critical path is A, B, D, E, for 12 days. Task C has one day of slack.

How to Find the Critical Path With AI
Step 1: List tasks and durations
Type each task and how long it takes, or paste a task list and let the AI estimate durations for you to check.
Step 2: Add dependencies
Say which tasks must finish before others start. The generator asks about any task with no link.
Step 3: Read the path and the slack
The AI marks the critical path and the slack on each task, so you know where a delay hurts and where it does not.
Step 4: Track it live
Open the project tracker below, assign owners, and move dates as work happens. The path updates with them. Gantt Chart is a paid view in Taskade. On Free, use the List or Table view of the same tasks.
Activity-on-Node vs Activity-on-Arrow
Critical path diagrams come in two drawing styles. The generator uses activity-on-node, the style most project tools use today.
| Style | What a box means | What an arrow means | When you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activity-on-node (AON) | A task with its duration | A dependency | Most CPM and Gantt tools |
| Activity-on-arrow (AOA) | An event, such as "design done" | A task | Older PERT charts and textbooks |
AON needs no dummy tasks to show a shared dependency, so the diagram above stays readable as the project grows. If your course or client asks for AOA, ask the generator to redraw the same task list in that style.
Use the Live Project App
The app on this page is a project flow tracker made with Taskade Genesis. It holds tasks, owners, and dependencies in one place. Clone the app to your workspace. Cloning an app that includes automations needs a paid plan. On Free, you earn free AI credits through referrals and invites, and you can upgrade any time. Pro is $10/mo billed annually.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate the critical path?
Do a forward pass to find each task's earliest start and finish, then a backward pass from the end date to find the latest start and finish. Tasks where earliest and latest match have zero slack, and they form the critical path.
What is slack or float?
Slack is how long a task can slip without moving the project end date. A task on the critical path has zero slack.
Can the critical path change?
Yes. If a task with slack slips past its slack, or a task gets shorter, a different chain can become the longest. Re-check the path after each big change. The tracker does that as you edit dates.
Critical path vs Gantt chart: what is the difference?
The critical path is a calculation: which chain of tasks sets the end date. A Gantt chart is a picture of tasks on a timeline. Many teams show the critical path inside a Gantt chart.
What is the critical path method (CPM)?
CPM is a scheduling method that finds the longest chain of dependent tasks in a project and the slack on every other task. It tells you which tasks to protect and which can wait. The critical path method guide covers it in depth.
Is the critical path generator free?
You can start on the Free plan, which includes 3 Taskade Genesis apps. On Free, you earn free AI credits through referrals and invites, and you can upgrade any time. Pro is $10/mo billed annually and adds the Gantt Chart view.
