The fundamental difference
Shopify and Taskade Genesis answer two different questions. Shopify gives a merchant a hosted online store: a product catalog, a cart, a secure checkout, payment processing, and a marketplace of apps to extend it. It is the specialist for selling to customers on the open web, and it does that job exceptionally well.
Taskade Genesis sits one layer behind the storefront. It is the AI app builder for the operational tools a business actually runs on: inventory dashboards, supplier and wholesale portals, returns trackers, customer intake forms, and internal CRMs. Instead of renting a separate piece of per-seat vertical software for each of those needs, you describe the tool and ship it, then connect it to the rest of your stack including Shopify.
Shopify asks: "How do you want to sell to your customers?" Taskade Genesis asks: "What do you want to build and own to run the business behind the sale?"
What is Taskade Genesis?
Taskade Genesis is the AI app builder inside the Taskade workspace, built on Workspace DNA: Memory (Projects) plus Intelligence (AI Agents) plus Execution (Automations) in a self-reinforcing loop where each pillar feeds the next. Founded in 2017 by John Xie, Dionis Loire, and Stan Chang, Taskade is Y Combinator-backed. You describe an app in one prompt and Taskade Genesis returns a deployed application — dashboards, portals, CRMs, intake forms, and internal tools — with custom domains, GenesisAuth email sign-in, password protection, and a public Community Gallery anyone can clone.
What is Shopify?
Shopify is a hosted commerce platform that lets businesses build, run, and scale an online store. Founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake in Ottawa, Canada, it has grown into one of the most widely used e-commerce platforms in the world. Merchants get a product catalog, customizable themes, a secure cart and checkout, integrated payments through Shopify Payments, point-of-sale hardware, shipping and tax tools, and a large third-party app marketplace to extend nearly any storefront feature.
Shopify's strengths are real and worth naming: a mature, conversion-optimized checkout; reliable payment processing at scale; a deep ecosystem of apps and themes; and strong merchant support and documentation. For a team whose core need is selling products online, that end-to-end commerce stack is hard to beat.
Shopify at a glance: Founded 2006 in Ottawa, Canada (Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, Scott Lake). Plans start around $29/month for Basic (billed annually) and reach $299/month for Advanced, with Shopify Plus on custom enterprise pricing. Includes hosted checkout, Shopify Payments, POS, and a large app marketplace. Reviews: G2.
Feature-by-feature deep dive
Storefront, checkout, and payments
- Shopify: Purpose-built for selling. Hosted, PCI-compliant checkout, integrated Shopify Payments, point-of-sale, shipping labels, and tax handling out of the box. This is its home turf and it wins here.
- Taskade Genesis: Not a hosted storefront or payment processor. It builds the operational apps around commerce and connects to Shopify to read orders and push updates, but it does not replace the checkout itself.
Building internal tools and dashboards
- Taskade Genesis: Describe an inventory dashboard, a supplier portal, or an order-ops tracker and ship a deployed app from one prompt, with a database, 7 project views, and AI agents included. No theme editing or developer time required.
- Shopify: Internal tools beyond the store admin and built-in reports typically require custom themes, marketplace apps, or developer work, often as additional paid layers.
AI agents and automation
- Taskade Genesis: AI Agents v2 ship with 34 built-in tools, persistent memory, custom tools, and multi-agent collaboration. Automations run on a durable runtime with automatic retries, branching, looping, filtering, and a Runs tab for inspection.
- Shopify: Offers Shopify Flow for automation on higher plans and a growing set of AI features, with much of the deeper capability delivered through marketplace apps.
Integrations and data flow
- Taskade Genesis: 100+ bidirectional integrations across 10 categories are included. Triggers pull events in, actions push data out, so a Taskade Genesis dashboard can sync directly with Shopify, Slack, Gmail, Stripe, and Google Sheets.
- Shopify: A large app marketplace covers most storefront extensions, though many apps carry their own monthly fees that stack on top of the base plan.
Ownership, collaboration, and access
- Taskade Genesis: Real-time collaboration on every plan, 7-tier role-based access from Owner to Viewer, and apps you build and own outright rather than rent per seat.
- Shopify: Staff accounts and permissions scale with plan tier, and the store and its data live inside Shopify's commerce model, which is exactly what most merchants want.
Pricing and total cost of ownership
| Plan tier | Taskade Genesis (annual) | Shopify (annual) |
|---|---|---|
| Free / trial | Free Forever, unlimited apps | Free trial, then paid plan required |
| Entry paid | Pro $16/mo — 10 seats, unlimited apps | Basic, around $29/mo |
| Growth | Business $40/mo — unlimited seats | Advanced, up to $299/mo |
| Scale | Max $200/mo / Enterprise $400/mo | Shopify Plus, custom enterprise pricing |
Taskade Genesis pricing is flat per plan rather than per-user metered: the same Pro plan covers up to 10 seats, and Business covers unlimited seats, with AI models, hosting, agents, and automations included. Shopify's model is built for commerce and scales differently — base plan plus transaction fees on stores not using Shopify Payments, plus paid marketplace apps for added features. Neither model is wrong; they price for different jobs.
When to choose each
Choose Shopify if:
- Your core need is a hosted online store with checkout and payment processing
- You want mature point-of-sale, shipping, and tax tooling out of the box
- You rely on a broad third-party app and theme marketplace
- You are selling products to customers on the open web at scale
Choose Taskade Genesis if:
- You want to build and own internal tools, dashboards, and portals from a prompt
- You prefer flat per-plan pricing over per-seat metering and stacked app fees
- You want AI agents and durable automations included, not bolted on
- You need to ship operational tools fast and iterate on them daily
Use both if: run your storefront on Shopify and build the surrounding inventory dashboards, supplier portals, and ops trackers in Taskade Genesis, connected through integrations.
