TL;DR: Runway is an AI video studio. It generates and edits footage with Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0 and partner models, from a Free plan with 125 one-time credits to Max at $76/mo billed annually. Taskade does not generate video. It runs the workflow around Runway: prompt libraries, review boards, client portals and automations. Taskade is Free Forever, and Pro is $10/mo billed annually for up to 10 seats. Try Taskade Genesis free →

The honest answer first: Taskade does not replace Runway

Runway generates video and Taskade does not. If you search for a free Runway alternative because you need new footage from a text prompt or an image, the alternatives are other video models, not a workspace. Taskade has no native video generation, no music generation, no voice cloning or text-to-speech, and no avatar video.

What Taskade replaces is the pile of spreadsheets, chat threads, shared folders and email chains that every Runway team builds around the studio. Somebody writes the brief. Somebody keeps the prompt that worked. Somebody collects client notes, chases approvals and posts the final cut. That work is where Taskade runs.

Runway asks: "What should this shot look like?" Taskade asks: "What happens to this shot after it exists?"

What is Runway?

Runway is an AI company that builds generative video, image and audio models and a cloud studio to use them. In October 2026 its homepage describes three platforms: Runway Creative for generating and editing media, Runway Dev for API access to its models, and Runway Robotics for world-model work built on GWM-1.

Runway at a glance (verified October 2026): Runway's flagship video model is Gen-4.5, at 12 credits per second of video. Aleph 2.0 restyles existing footage. Paid plans include partner models such as Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5 and Nano Banana Pro. Plans run from Free (125 one-time credits) to Max ($76/mo billed annually), plus a per-seat Team plan and custom Enterprise. See runway.com/pricing.

The pace of releases is fast. Runway's changelog for September and October 2026 lists a Team plan, plugins for Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve, Runway MCP on Cursor and Grok Bot, ElevenLabs V4 audio, and a Seedance 2.5 Draft mode in its Agent.

Runway does well:

  • High-quality text-to-video and image-to-video generation with its own Gen-4.5 model
  • One studio that hosts many models, so a team can test Gen-4.5, Kling and Seedance side by side
  • Editing of existing footage with Aleph 2.0, 4K upscaling and frame-rate conversion
  • Native plugins inside Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve
  • An agent and MCP server, so assistants in other tools can generate media in Runway

Where teams hit limits: Runway organizes the media. The surrounding business work, such as client intake, budgets, shot schedules, approvals by people outside the studio, the content calendar and posting to the rest of the company, lives in other tools. Individual plans also cap the number of projects, from 3 on Standard to 10 on Max.

What is Taskade?

Taskade is an AI workspace built on Workspace DNA: Memory (Projects), Intelligence (Agents) and Execution (Automations). Projects hold your briefs, prompts and review queues. Agents read those projects and draft scripts, shot lists and prompt variations. Automations move work between people and tools. Taskade Genesis turns a prompt into a live app, such as a client review portal or an intake form, that reads and writes the same workspace data.

Taskade offers multiple project views: List, Board, Table, Mind Map, Docs (Beta), Gantt Chart, Calendar, Actionsheet and Org Chart. Gantt Chart, Actionsheet and Org Chart need a paid plan. Access is role-based from Owner to Viewer, so clients and freelancers can join with the right level of access.

Feature-by-feature comparison

Generation

  • Runway generates video, images, music, voice and sound effects inside one studio, with credits per second or per image.
  • Taskade does not generate video or audio. Taskade EVE can generate images while it builds a Taskade Genesis app, and those images land in the workspace and use AI credits.

Prompt storage and reuse

  • Runway keeps generations, references and Brand Kits in projects, and its Team plan shares agent skills across a workspace.
  • Taskade keeps a prompt library as a structured project. Each row can hold the prompt, the model used, the reference images, the duration, the cost in credits and the reviewer verdict. An agent can search that library and write new variations in your house style. See the advertising prompt library and social media prompts for starting points.

Review and approval

  • Runway supports frame-accurate comments with mentions on the Team plan, which is strong for creative notes on a specific frame.
  • Taskade handles the approval process around the footage: who must sign off, by when, in what order, and what happens next. A Board view with columns such as Draft, Internal review, Client review and Approved gives everyone one status.

Automation

  • Runway offers Workflows and an Agent for media pipelines inside the studio.
  • Taskade runs automations across 100+ integrations. Triggers pull events in and actions push data out. When a task moves to Approved, an automation can post to Slack, add a calendar entry and notify the client. The generic HTTP request action can call third-party APIs, including Runway's developer API, with your own key. Taskade has no native Runway connector.

Client delivery

  • Runway shares work inside a Runway workspace.
  • Taskade Genesis builds a client portal from a prompt. It goes live at a shareable URL with email-and-password sign-in on every plan, password protection on Pro and above, and custom domains on Pro and above. Sign-in confirms who a visitor is. You match records to each login and test with a second account.

A concrete "use both" workflow

This is a workflow that a small studio or in-house video team can set up in an afternoon.

  1. Brief. A client fills an intake form in a Taskade Genesis app. The answers land in a Taskade project as a new brief.
  2. Script and shot list. A Taskade agent reads the brief and your brand notes and drafts a script and a shot list. A producer edits it.
  3. Prompt library. Each shot gets a row in a Table view with the Runway prompt, the reference image, the target duration and the model. An agent writes two variations for each shot.
  4. Generate. The editor generates the shots in Runway, picks the best take, and attaches the export link to the row.
  5. Review. The row moves across a Board: Internal review, then Client review. Comments and due dates stay on the task.
  6. Deliver. When the row moves to Approved, an automation posts the cut to a Slack channel and adds it to the content calendar.
  7. Learn. The prompt that won stays in the library with its verdict, so the next brief starts from what worked.
Brief (Taskade Genesis form)
    |
Script + shot list (Taskade agent)
    |
Prompt library (Taskade Table) --> Generate (Runway Gen-4.5)
    | |
Review board (Taskade Board) <-------------+
    |
Approved --> Slack post + content calendar (Taskade automation)

Runway's credits buy generations. On Runway's own figures, Standard's 625 monthly credits equal about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video. Taskade's plans buy the workspace, agents, automations and hosted apps. Because the two products do different jobs, most teams budget for both. Check runway.com/pricing and Taskade pricing for current rates.

Choose Runway if

  • You need to generate or edit video footage. Runway's Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 do work that Taskade does not do.
  • You want many video and image models in one studio, so you can compare Gen-4.5, Kling and Seedance outputs without separate accounts.
  • Your editors live in Premiere Pro, After Effects or DaVinci Resolve and want generation inside the timeline.

Choose Taskade if

  • You need one place for briefs, prompt libraries, shot lists, approvals and delivery across clients and channels.
  • You want AI agents that draft scripts, shot lists and prompt variations from your own brand notes.
  • You want automations that move approved work into Slack, calendars, CRMs and 100+ other tools.
  • You want a client portal or intake form that your team builds from a prompt with Taskade Genesis.

Use both if you produce AI video for clients or for a brand. Runway makes the footage. Taskade runs the process that decides what to make, keeps the prompts that worked, and gets approved work out the door.

Frequently asked questions

Can Taskade make videos?

No. Taskade has no native video generation. Use Runway or another video model for footage, and use Taskade for the workflow around it.

Can a Taskade agent write Runway prompts?

Yes. A Taskade agent can read a brief and your prompt library and draft new prompts, shot lists and variations. You paste the prompt into Runway, or send it with an HTTP request automation to the Runway API on your own key.

Does Taskade store video files?

Taskade projects can hold links, attachments and notes for each asset. Many teams keep the master files in Runway or cloud storage and track status, feedback and approvals in Taskade.

Which Runway plan suits a small team?

Runway's Team plan is for two to nine people and pools credits across seats. Individual plans suit one creator. Pair either with Taskade Pro, which covers up to 10 seats for $10/mo billed annually.

Run the workflow around your video studio

Runway gives your team better footage. Taskade gives the same team one workspace where briefs, prompts, reviews and deliveries stay connected, with agents and automations that keep work moving.
