Agent Collaboration: How Multi-Agent Teams Work

A single AI agent is a generalist with one set of instructions. A team of agents, each tuned for a different role, can split a problem into specialized parts and finish it faster and more accurately. The interesting question is not whether to use multiple agents. It is how they should coordinate. Four patterns dominate, and most real systems mix them.
Why Multiple Agents Beat One
A single agent has to be good at everything its task touches. Research, writing, code, planning, summarizing. The prompt swells, the agent drifts, and quality drops with every additional role you cram in.
Splitting the work into specialized agents fixes this. A research agent only researches. A writing agent only writes. A reviewer agent only reviews. Each one has a tight prompt, a focused tool set, and a clear handoff point. The payoff: specialists outperform generalists, you can see which agent did what for debugging, and independent subtasks run in parallel.
The cost is coordination overhead. Pick the wrong pattern and the team spends more time talking to itself than solving the problem.
The Four Coordination Patterns
Almost every multi-agent system in production today reduces to one or a mix of four patterns.
Handoff. Agent A passes a structured payload to Agent B, who passes to Agent C. Linear, predictable, easy to debug. Best for clear pipelines like research, then draft, then edit.
Voting. Several agents independently answer the same question, and a tally picks the most common response. Useful when individual agents are noisy. Trades cost for reliability.
Consensus. Agents debate or refine each other's outputs until they agree. Slower than voting, but better for open-ended judgment calls.
Hierarchical delegation. A manager agent decomposes the task, assigns subtasks to workers, and assembles their outputs. Scales best to complex branching work because the manager can dynamically summon specialists.
Most real systems mix patterns. A manager might delegate to workers, each worker might use handoff internally, and on contested questions the manager might run a vote.
What Agents Need to Coordinate Well
Coordination needs three concrete ingredients.

Shared memory is the one most teams underweight. If agents only see what the previous agent wrote in a message, they lose all the work that did not make it into that message. This is why persistent memory is the coordination substrate behind every serious multi-agent system. The agents mostly read and write to a shared workspace, not to each other.
Where Multi-Agent Teams Earn Their Keep
A few task shapes where multi-agent coordination consistently beats single-agent solutions:
- Long-horizon research. Splitter, parallel researchers, synthesis. A near-perfect fit for hierarchical delegation.
- Code review. One agent writes, a second critiques, a third re-writes. Classic consensus pattern.
- Customer support triage. A router classifies the ticket, then hands off to a specialist for billing, technical, or account questions.
- Content pipelines. Outline, draft, edit, fact-check. Linear handoff.
The common thread is that the work has natural seams. If your task does not decompose, a single well-tuned agent often beats a team.

Multi-agent coordination is not free. Every agent call costs tokens and time. If your task can be done by one well-prompted agent reading one Project, do that. Multi-agent shines when the task has real subparts that benefit from specialization.
A good test: if you can describe the task in a single paragraph and a single agent can solve it in one call, you do not need a team.
